The colder months are with us or as we in the trade call it, 'boiler season'. This is when all the older boilers which are still working but are on the brink of breaking down, start to break down. Usually this happens when a person needs a bit more heat in their home, so they turn up the room thermostat or the thermostat on the boiler and this then pushed the older boiler just over the edge and causes it to break down.

Most people these days if they need a plumber or boiler specialist and haven't asked someone for a recommended plumber will look online for a local person.

This where the deception begins...

Looking online for boiler specialist, you will be seen loads of companies offering a local service and FREE CALL OUT - the engineer drives to your home and parks up

FREE DIAGNOGSIS - this means the engineer get his (or her) tools out and checks out the boiler. This process is critical as the wrong diagnosis means costly mistakes and parts being fitted that didn't need to be installed, it takes up valuable time and resources as the electronic testing equipment is expensive to buy and calibrate each year.

And all this for free...

I won't bore you with the operational costs and commercial responbilites of managing a team of engineers, however... they are not cheap, in fact they are very expensive.

Any person or company offering all the above for free will also do the following to you... once they arrive

# Their first objective is to get into your home and get in front of your boiler - Free works a treat

# Then after examining your boiler, you will hear things like:

'good news we can repair your boiler', you will then be completely overcharged with no tangible breakdown of labour and materials. Materials will have mark ups of 200% or more 'parts are obsolete or difficult to obtain',

'parts will take 3 weeks',

'you need a new boiler, we can fit it tomorrow'

A few points when getting a new boiler fitted -

- If the offer is too good to be true then it probably is ! - Don't buy

- Choose an installer that shows the company or home address, if the installer or company hide behind 0800 ... mobile numbers or postcodes and provide no tangible address, think twice !

- The installer has to by law notify and register your new boiler with the Gas Safe and also the building control office of your local council - if this is not done, not only will the installation be illegal, when you sell the property, there is likely to be problems with sale process !

If these guys were Gas Engineers they would work at the London Boiler Company!
